About Us

OUR HISTORY

In 2015, two long time Island residents of the Bocilla Islands Chain discussed how to preserve the special place where they lived. They wanted future residents to enjoy and protect local environmental resources for years and generations to come. An informal gathering was held with several other residents and Go-Pher Green was born. It was officially designated a public, not for profit 501(c)3 charity in 2016.

Little did they know that this mission would resonate so well with other Islanders.  Within one year, the first conservation easement on private property was donated. In 2017 the name was changed to Bocilla Islands Conservancy, Inc. to better reflect our environmental inclusiveness.  A website was created, environmental education programs were started and more conservation easements acquired.

Programs have expanded to include relocation of gopher tortoises for residents building new homes, demonstration gardens promoting native and Florida friendly vegetation and trees, removal of invasive and harmful plants, island clean ups, and partnering with local businesses and governmental agencies. From two to many, our conservation dream continues to grow.

WHAT ARE WE?

Bocilla Islands Conservancy Inc. is a public, non-profit, non-political organization working in partnership with residents of the Bocilla Islands Chain: Don Pedro Island, Knight Island, Little Gasparilla Island and Thornton Key.

Our organization is dedicated to the long-term preservation of open, undeveloped space and natural habitat on the Bocilla Islands Chain.

Bocilla Islands Conservancy Inc. has the ability to customize how a property becomes a conservation easement.

Through the acquisition of land and conservation easements, sensitive habitat will be preserved and protected, helping to keep the island's ecosystem in balance.
